Neosporin® contains three antibiotics: bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin B. They together kill bacteria on the skin and prevent an infection in the wound.
Bacitracin is safe for dogs, as polymyxin B. However, neomycin apparently has been linked to loss of hearing with intravenous use in some cases, so it is recommended that you do not aplly neomycin to your dog without first consulting your vet.
Using Neosporin® on a minor injury to your dog may be fine at times. But, you must be careful if the location of the wound can be reached by your dog’s tongue because it can make your dog sick if it ingests too much.
Neosporin® kills off any live, existing bacteria, and stops them from growing. When applied to the skin, it helps to create a physical barrier against bacteria.
However, there are alternative products designed specifically for dogs. These products are completely safe, even if your dog ingests them like the following:
